Is Japan's massive seafood industry on the rise, or in decline?

Press release   •   Nov 16, 2015 11:29 EST

According to data from the Japan Chain Stores Association, total seafood retail sales in fiscal year 2014 totaled JPY 77.8 billion (€578.7 million/$647.3 million), remaining almost flat from the previous year, but remaining the top seafood sales channel in the country, accounting for 60-70 percent of sales.

Japan’s average household spending on seafood in 2014 was JPY 79,465 (€591.10/$661.10), an increase of 1 percent year-on-year, in part a reflection of pressure on seafood prices.

Salmon -- both farmed salmon and wild salmon -- sits among the top of Japanese dinner plates, as do mainstays such as tuna, squid, surimi and shrimp.

An ageing population is playing havoc with the country's economy and the younger generation has dramatically different seafood purchasing habits and species demands. The result? A rapidly changing marketplace.
