IntraFish Media, the world’s leading seafood news provider, together with sponsors Trident Seafoods and the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, is bringing together the seafood industry’s top female executives for its inaugural Women in Seafood Leadership Summit to be held in downtown Seattle, June 6.
The aim of the event is two-pronged: to discuss and tackle the challenges faced by women in the sector, and to help seafood businesses attract a greater number of talented women to the industry.
The evening will showcase an impressive speaker lineup, with top female executives from Whole Foods, Trident Seafoods, the UK Seafish Industry Authority, the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute and Love the Wild speaking across a range of topics.
A discussion panel led by IntraFish Editor Elisabeth Fischer will put the spotlight on the real challenges faced by women in the sector and seek to pinpoint opportunities for change and a larger representation of women in seafood.
IntraFish editors will select delegates from a range of sectors across the industry to attend this limited-seating FREE event, so if you are interested in attending, follow the link and register your name.
IntraFish prides itself on driving the industry to improve, and its Women in Seafood interview series, launched in mid-2015 did just that, highlighting the challenges faced by women in the industry and exposing the way forward in attracting and recruiting more female leadership to the sector.
"We heard loud and clear that while women in the industry love the work, its people and the challenges, they also face numerous hurdles on their way to the top," said Fischer, who initiated the series. "And those same hurdles are keeping new women from entering the sector.
“This issue needs to be addressed and with the launch of the Women in Seafood Summit in Seattle IntraFish hopes to keep doing its part,” Fischer said.
The series was followed early in 2017, by an industry survey conducted by IntraFish and Seafish, which found some major obstacles to bringing more women into the sector.
So, why should top female seafood professionals attend? Here are just a few reasons:
- 35% of women in our survey said the seafood industry lacks a support network or mentoring program. The IntraFish Women in Seafood Leadership Forum will give professionals access to a network of other elite executives that can help both them and their companies grow.
- A majority of women in the sector say they are not clear of all the opportunities in the industry. The forum will offer insight into some of the key job areas for female professionals to advance their careers.
- Over 70% of women say that old fashioned and/or male-dominated cultural attitudes are the one thing they would change to make the industry more attractive to women. IntraFish's editors will be leading Q&As and moderating frank discussions on how to overcome some of the cultural barriers in the seafood sector to ensure success.
- The overwhelming majority of women in the sector said their work was engaging and challenging, and would recommend others enter the sector. The IntraFish Women in Seafood Leadership Forum is a great way for your best ambassadors to spread the word about the seafood industry, and bring the next generation of talent into your company.
All seafood executives should be investing in their teams, and sending your elite female professionals to this event is one way to invest in their careers -- and your company's future.
